Focusing on emergency remediation and severe flowline blockage recovery, this paper outlines the deployment of highly advanced, in-situ reacting thermochemical fluids capable of melting and disintegrating heavy paraffin plugs.
When polymeric flow improvers are insufficient or mechanical failure leads to extended pipeline shutdowns, thixotropic gelation forms solid wax plugs that resist massive hydraulic yield pressures. To resolve this, highly advanced thermochemical fluids (TCF) are being deployed as an environmentally benign flow assurance intervention. TCFs involve the initiation of controlled exothermic thermochemical reactions directly within the affected pipeline fluid.
When injected at a 1 M concentration (comprising 14% to 33% v/wt of the waxy oil), the carefully controlled chemical reaction generates massive amounts of thermal energy in situ. This reaction rapidly raises the local temperature of the oil significantly above its native 48 °C pour point.
Bench-top and simulated large-scale applications of these thermochemical solutions on damaged tubing have demonstrated a staggering capacity to remove up to 98% of heavily deposited wax. This in-situ thermal generation entirely restores the original hydraulic temperature and pressure profiles in severely blocked flowlines without requiring invasive physical pipe cutting or highly hazardous mechanical drilling operations.
